One fine day in the late 90s, a psychologist snaps at his young daughter.

Back to the grumpy psychologist and his daughter.

His name is Martin Seligman. And when he snaps at his daughter, she hits him with a retort that sends all of psychology realing:

"Daddy, stop being so grumpy. I used to be a whiney baby, but I learned to handle myself. So you learn to be less grumpy, too."

Mind-blowing, right? Yeah, not so much...

To understand why this was so world-shaking for Martin Seligman, realize that up to now he's spent his life studying people who feel depressed, fearful, and helpless.

Cheery stuff, right?

I mean, imagine the the rush of purpose and joy Seligman must have felt when he published his big paper, "Chronic fear produced by unpredictable electric shock."

But Seligman's focus on human fear and disfunction isn't surprising: up until now,psychology essentially comprised of trying to diagnose and fix super messed up people.

As if his focus wasn't depressing enough, Seligman started to realize that people weren't just inflicted with poor mental health: actually, otherwise healthy people were actively learning behaviors which steam rolled their own mental health.

Enter Seligman's no-nonsense daughter.

Her retort sent him in a new direction: if he'd uncovered ways people learned to wreck their mind, could he discover ways that people could learn to build happier, healthier minds?

Margin Seligman thought long and hard.

Then he got elected president of the American Psychological Association.

Things were about to change...

Use the slider above the visualization to filter papers by the year they were published. For example, you can slide the left and right ends of the slider to look only at papers published between 1998 (the year of Martin Seligman’s APA presidency) and 2008, to view the short-term potential impact of his presidency on Positive Psychology.

What some specific aspects should I should check out?

Kristen D. Neff (in brown) pioneered research around the concept of Self Compassion, a new front for Positive Psychology. You can see her work largely cites itself, with her papers sitting in a dense cluster.

Robert A. Emmons (in light purple) developed a “satisfaction with life scale” which works as a central hub uniting a variety of authors studying positive emotion and wellbeing. If you slide the right slider rightward beginning in 1986, you can see the highly influential paper gain traction and unify the field.

Isolating Carol S. Dweck and Angela Lee Duckworth, you can use the slider to watch how Dweck’s established research on intelligence and mindset supports Duckworth’s later research on effective school interventions.
